Missed the meeting as usual (job hours) and going to check this out. "Linux" radio, one more time

Thanks for all the good feedback on Internet radio! While playing with a FreeSBIE live CD (9-27-04 release, sporting an Italian flag) on an old computer last night, I found a very usable streaming broadcast browser: http://www.nongnu.org/streamtuner/ which requires: http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/ It isn't quite iTunes, but hey, it does the job quite well. AND, it was fun to see how well FreeBSD found old hardware, found the dhcp server, and played music. (I was actually trying out a few distros in my spare time over the past few weeks, to see if anything is fast enough to use as a desktop on a PII 400, 128MB system. So far, the rpm distros are about equally slow, Knoppix installed well, but is only slightly faster, Slackware is somewhat faster ... but VectorLinux, which is a Slack variant, is by far the fastest ... VERY fast, actually, considering the hardware ... seems that it is designed for older hardware. Of course, choice of graphical interface is always a factor.). Rick

[OT] Missing baryons found!

For the geeks among us: there was some really exciting news in Nature this morning. Astronomers have located the missing ~30-40% of the baryonic (normal) matter in the universe. It's especially cool because it matched predictions. Here is the article: <http://www.nature.com/cgi-taf/DynaPage.taf?file=/nature/journal/v433/n7025/…> And the paper: <http://www.nature.com/cgi-taf/DynaPage.taf?file=/nature/journal/v433/n7025/…> This significantly increases the probability that the standard cosmological model is correct. The next thing to look for is 'sinks' of dark matter at the ends of these baryonic filaments pulling them apart. The picture is starting to look as though the universe is covered in dark matter points with baryonic filaments interconnecting them like a web and galaxies interspersed in the empty space between.

So anyone just pulling down gentoo and compiling wouldn't necessarily know how to optimize. So to say "compile gentoo, don't use compiled gentoo" does nothing to improve the speed of the installed system. Now if you had said "compile gentoo with the compile options -abc#@$%%%^$###..., don't use compiled gentoo", or something similar, then I might agree with you. But I doubt it. I'm skeptical of how much more performance you can get out of gentoo by compiling as opposed to using their pre-optimized binaries. At least not with older stock equipment.

Googling for "use flags" and your architecture will find a lot of discussion and advice. Since the flags are actually gcc compile flags, the discussion extends beyond gentoo.

You haven't been able to find HP printers that are Linux compatible? I find that hard to believe. I have one and it works great, in fact I have two hooked up and they work great. As far as cheap ink. Well, there in lies the problem of your request. As has been said the current selection of cheap printers all have expensive ink. You might want to google for "inexpensive ink printers review Linux" or something like that to find reviews of cost to maintain ink jet printers. If you want a good printer, supported by Linux and cheap ink. Find an older HP LaserJet in some of the area used PC shops. I have an older LaserJet II or III (can't remember). I paid $25 for it, It's big and it is jamming, so you have to disassemble and clean it good. As is it'll will take one page at a time fed in manually. I've been to lazy to clean it. Ink isn't cheap, but last for a long time so comparatively it's cheap. It's yours if you want it. I have a Canon BJ 10e you can have, no charge. It's DOS compatible, cheap ink, slow, small footprint, old. I'm not even sure it does letter quality. I'd hate to feed it a 50 page document. I have a Lexmark 4 color printer, ink is not cheap, and I think you'd have to set it up in Windows and install the software to diagnose why it's suddenly printing in reverse colors. Lexmark does have a closed source driver for it, and there are open source drivers for it too. You could always use it as a black ink printer. It's fairly fast, and costs more than $50 new. You can have that one too, I keep it around saying someday I'm going to diagnose what is wrong with it. It's a nice printer and prints excellent quality photos with photo ink.
