I forgot to mention the venerable MuLinux. I used to dabble with it on an old machine. It's floppy based too and very feature rich. It was out there back in 98 when I started. It still uses the 2.0.x series of kernels, so it's not up to date by any means. For an old laptop or desktop it's not too bad though. VNC is on one of the disks you can build. I suspect that the guts of the Inspiron 8xxx adaptors is quite the same. With perhaps minor variations for connectors. The reason being to be able to "lock-in" users to a proprietary adaptor. Much like what vendors have done with batteries. I could be wrong, it might be that each laptop has different power needs, still they could have generalized the adaptors. Just because one model is being recalled doesn't mean that other models aren't also having problems. It's generally "cheaper", to face the lawsuits than it is to fix a component with a faulty design, from a purely actuarial point of view. TV-OUT on laptop causes major damage, fire / shock

Tonight, at roughly 10:30pm 12/02/04 I proceeded to plug my tvout adapter into my laptop to watch a dvd on my tv. I had just been a video from the cam corder, so the tv ports were ok and so was the rca cable. When I plugged it in, all I saw was a white flash. 3 of my friends in the room say that the RCA cable melted, the tv smoked inside with lots of white flashing inside of it, and the RCA cable was blown out of the laptop TV-OUT connector. I with a numb arm, awoke laying on the floor. Looking at the rca cable, I see bare wire sticking out of where it melted about 2 inches melted at each end. I'm still in a state of panic/shock as to what just happened. I will be researching legal options now, as my laptop warranty ended because the dell wouldn't let me renew because of a mix up, and other things that have built up (like sending it in for fan swap to have it come back not even turning it on), now this.. a laptop I'm totally terrified of even turning on. Update to the little story, I got a junk VCR that I have, and tried to plug the RCA tv out into it. it also proceeded to fry the vcr, and new rca cable. This is a problem with the laptop. The thing has worked with the same tv in the past, only thing different is that the laptop and tv were plugged into the same powerstrip this time. Anyone have any recommendations/experiences?

It may have something to do with the inaccuracy of the older read heads on those CD drives. As for not being able to boot to CD, there was a point where the architecture changed within the PC. I recall in my first Pentium, the CD drive IDE cable plugged directly into the sound card. After most of the parts had been replaced in that PC I had plugged the replacement CD into the mobo and the drive worked better, however it still needed a boot floppy. So does the TV work at all now? Did you go to the hospital? You should just to document the accident if you intend to sue somebody. Looks like with using Small Linux you need 4MB for an X Windows system. It's going to be pretty basic. (More inline.) X terminal distributions?

I have several old laptops that could live a good life of xterminals. Unfortunately, some don't have hard drives, most have memory less than 64MB, and one is a 486 with 4MB. All can use a pcmcia ethernet card. What do most people do with these? Are there distributions catering to these or do I have to build them myself? I'd hate throw them away. They use so little power, have well designed hardware, and look nice.

Besides, fullsize CDs are cheaper than miniCDs. I like the miniCDs only for the coolness factor.
