Setting up a UI on industrial control machines.

I've got a line on someone local who needs a person to set up the user interface on an industrial machine, eg. on a PLC. I have no idea about the language they're using but they already have someone doing the main programming and they just need someone to build the UI. I don't think it's terribly complex but the programmer doesn't want to do it. Contact me and I can pass along email or phone numbers. Jon.

Drawing/Writing Tablets in GNU+Linux

I'm looking for input from people who have used drawing tablets in GNU+Linux. (I'm not talking about tablet PCs, but about the input device you use with an electronic pen. An example is a Wacom Tablet.) I've used the DigiPro WP8060 USB tablet I got off woot.com some time ago. I thought it was OK, for the $40 it cost me, but I'm now looking for one for annotating work documents. I have used the program 'Xournal', but am also looking for advice if anyone has used similar software. Documents will arrive in docx or pdf format, and need to go out on one of those two as well. I like how Xournal saves all annotation work in a separate .xoj file and allows removal of individual strokes at a later time. This tablet will be used at a desktop, so weight and power are not a concern. It is not likely to be used for artwork, so pressure sensitivity is also not a concern.

I didn't see it in an ad and I haven't seen it at that price online. I verified the model last night and it is the newer model with an integrated controller, which may be a source of headaches for using it without their software. It's a "While Supplies Last" display, but it was still mostly full. I wonder if WD was trying to move a large stock of these over Black Friday and even the $50 price tag wasn't enough to sway people over other stuff. Jon. WD portable hard drive question

I was browsing the stuff at the Walmart in Lee's Summit and they have the WDBAAA5000ABK ( http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=700 ) for $50, half MSRP and $10 cheaper than Microcenter. I might stop by again to verify the model number. This is the newer design with the USB controller integrated to the drive's mainboard and some reviews mention a high power draw over the single USB port for some machines. It's also got some sort of VCD thing going with the WD SmartWare crapware on it. Anyone used one of these under Linux or other UNIXy OS and have any tips? The $50 is pretty dang cheap for a half terabyte of portable storage, but it's not cheap enough to have a boat anchor laying around. Jon.

Got the squeeze installer to work from unetbootin after a few failures. Install seemed to go fine, no errors, but on reboot no grub, just windows. So far I've failed to get a live USB image or CD to boot. This thing has two "hidden" partitons, and I suspect it's using some sort of windows trickery that boots to W7 no matter what. I _did_ get the unetbootin and clonezilla USB images to boot.

On the Acer 532h netbooks, I've run into two issues I haven't cared enough to fix just yet: The SDHC reader didn't work at all under the last build of Ubuntu, and the mouse was problematic. The multi-touch trackpad caused frequent errors when using whatever the default mouse driver was, but there was a fix out there somewhere. Upgraded to the current version a week or three prior to its release, but that caused the mouse to become completely unresponsive. Been too busy to deal with it since, but beware: These particualar etbooks aren't exactly problem-free.
